  2. Excellent book. The color quality is superb. The subjects are priceless, as the color is from the era when most were shooting B&W. I would give it my highest rating for photo value. It's not a book of history per se, of course, but is superb information.

  4. I used a number his photos in my articles in Railroad Model Craftsman, July and Aug. 2000 and I know that Tom Dill used any number of them in his works. They also show up in a number of other books. Tony is right when he says these are fine photos so if for no other reason get the book for that reason and do a little detective on your own, it will be fun.

  1. Excellent book. Both Vol. 5 (Pre-War) and Vol. 6 (Post-War) on Southern Pacific's Pullman-Standard passenger cars, along with several other volumes in the P-S, Budd & ACF passenger car series are excellent resources for both the fan and modeler. They contain numerous photos of not only the exteriors, but also include plans and photos of the lightweight streamlined cars including interiors, underframes and lots lots more. A real plus are the plans showing both sides (good for window arrangements etc.) along with top-down drawings of the interior arrangements. These also include lightweight Pullman-Standard passenger cars for Espee trains in addition to the Daylights, and include Daylight cars from all the various trainsets ever built!

  1. Spiral bound with a hard red cover, they lie flat when opened and contain numerous foldouts. Both are long OOP but can sometimes be found on eBay or through used bookstores.

Railroad Shop Practice

  1. Shops photos/practices - circa 1921

  2. There a very interesting book available on-line as a free PDF ( www.archive.org( or as an inexpensive ($30) hard-copy re-print (Lindsay Publishing, www.lindsaybks.com), entitled: "Railroad Shop Practice", by Frank A. Stanley and published in 1921. The book is a series of chapters on actual shop practices, detailing what tool/machine to use and how to set up, machine and treat just about everything that was mounted/used on a steam locomotive back in 1921. If you want to see what it was like nearly 100 years ago, this is certainly a valuable resource.

  3. What really makes the book interesting to an SP railfan, is that there are a number of photos/text specifically devoted to SP's shop operations and practices at Sacramento and Sparks. All good stuff for the devoted.

  4. Incidentally, I came across Lindsay Publishing about a month ago after having read an article in Live Steam and Outdoor Railroading. The article was a re-print on steam locomotive engineering out of one of the many books that Lindsay publishes and re-publishes. Lindsay has gotten copies of the original "International Correspondence School" texts on steam power from the 1900-1910 period and re-printed those at low, low prices (like $8/book). If you're interested in what/how people learned about the theory and practice of steam power back in the early 1900's, Lindsay's website is a very inexpensive way to go about finding out. They've got all manner of text of railroading, steam power, machine shop practices prior to CAD/CAM, injection molding, etc. - really a treasure trove of highly interesting, educational and highly useful (e.g., I'm actually making one of the plastic injection molding machines for use in turning out various detail parts for my Harriman Standard Lines layout) technical information from an earlier era. An added plus is that the owner/publisher is a true one-of-a-kind, no BS type of individual who is absolutely dedicated to providing great customer service at very reasonable prices.

S.P. "Circular 4, List of Officers, Agencies, Stations, Etc."

  1. This book has a list of all locomotive turning facilities, by division, which includes the wyes. The standard jobs at each yard were described in a circular to help switchmen decide what jobs to bid on. Note not all Circular 4s, have the same information. Only those issued from 1941 to 1961 list locomotive turning facilities and give any information about them. The first Circular 4 was published in 1927. Before that they were published under the same title as "Form 70". All the Form 70s, include the location of turntables and wyes, but give no dimensions, etc. The Form 70s run from 1907-1926.

SP Common Standard Plans Vol. 1-5

  1. Published by Bruce Petty's Steam Age Equipment Co.

  2. Bruce Petty's five volumes of SP standard plans are a must for scratchbuilders. Scan the plans and convert them to HO scale (a line 20 scale feet in length is provided in many plans. Many are exactly HO scale already!

  3. Tony Thompson

  4. They're worthwhile references to have for the fan and modeler alike; I recommend them highly! Although they don't contain every single CS issued by SP (only John Sweetser has a complete set, including all the revisions, carefully stored in one of his climate controlled mega-million square foot warehouses, they certainly contain many important and valuable ones.

  5. The CS Plans books are a little larger than an H-P flatbed scanner, so instead of scanning, They are photographed and posted images to the list's Files section in a folder named "Common Standard Plans books". Hopefully the images give viewers an idea the contents of each volume.

  7. Volume 5 also includes a set of color chips that go with page 80. In the photo, I placed the color chips in their appropriate places on that page; otherwise I keep them in the plastic sleeve they came in, rather than paste them into the book. I also photographed the cover and TOC page for the Maintenance of Way Equipment book Bruce published.

SP Daylight Locomotive

  1. Robert Church

  2. two books on the Southern Pacific Daylight Locomotives.

  3. Dr. Church's book is of course the most complete story available on the Espee GS-class 4-8-4 locomotives. There have been a couple editions released; a 120-page edition first published in 1966 by Kratville Publications -- a second printing was released in 1976                                                               http://tinyurl.com/church-daylight

  4. Dr. Church revised and enlarged the book, publishing a 424-page edition through Signature Press in 2004. If you're a book collector, by all means acquire both. However, if you're primarily interested in the information contained therein, purchase the currently available 2004 edition.                     www.signaturepress.com/DL.html

Over 250 photos, drawings and roster information on the Alcos delivered beginning with the high hood 660s in 1939 (including an all-black demonstrator) and closing out with the “center cab” Century-415 locomotives that arrived in 1966.

  1. GE 44-tonners and 70-tonners, both on SP and its subsidiaries, are illustrated in extensive detail. Joe does a good job explaining the whys, whens & wheres of the 44-ton units including the P&SR swaps.

S.P. Historic Diesels Vol 19:  GE B- Boats

  1. Strapac, Joseph A.

  2. Shade Tree Books

  1. SPHD Vol. 19 will be on GE B-boats and wide-nose AC and DC locomotives (C44-9Ws and AC4400CWs). Volume 19 addresses post-1978 General Electric “B-boats,” Dash 8 and Dash 9 units, and the Safety Cab AC4400 locomotives. There is a brief chapter on the Morrison-Knudsen MK5000 project as well.

  1. As usual, this book includes a chapter illustrating “graduates,” GE locomotives that have gone on to other owner/operators.

  2.

  3. And—since a large percentage of SP B-boats were NOT simply cut up for scrap by the UP when worn out, there is a chapter detailing their conversion to high-tech switchers. Both Green Goats and gensets were rebuilt from SP units, as well as those mysterious flat-gray radio control cars.

S.P. Station Books

  1. Before the "List of Officers, Agencies, and Stations" appeared as Form 70 in 1907 they were simply published under that title, starting in 1874. 1896 is the first list with turntables. The generic name for the whole series is "Station Books". Those published from 1879-1884 and from 1907 through 1936 are numbered 3-10 and 31-61. With the rest of the series it is fairly difficult to know if you have them all as they were not necessarily published every year.

  5. 50% of the captions are incorrect – sometimes incredibly so. There are over 100 errors. It’s everything from showing a shot at the Oakland Mole and stating it’s in Portland, to calling a PA1 an F-unit, to stating the 3rd & Townsend station trackage was hemmed in by Townsend Street and Isalis Creek (Isalis Creek is south of Army Street and the trackage wasn’t even constrained by China Basin). Ever heard of the snowsheds at “Norton” (three times) or San Louis (Lois in once case) Obispo? A good out the vestibule shot of the steam powered Coast Daylight in 1954 was captioned that we are looking at an all heavyweight train. He referred to five stations in Oregon as being on the Coast Route.

  3. Guy's book covers a period on the Espee from roughly from 1920 to 1965. A terrific resource to have among your reference. The Christon book is absolutely invaluable for many facets of SP freight car history, but it also contains fairly many errors (or misstatements, if you will). Info in it must be double-checked to be sure. That said, I use it all the time.

Southern Pacific Railroad Colorful History

  1. Brian Solomon

  2. MBI Publishing, 1999

  3. It's pretty well done. Brian Solomon is a good author and fairly knowledgeable about the SP. Brian knows Espee's Peninsula service were called "commutes", but probably could have avoided referring to the Suburban coaches as "Harriman-era", since this tends to confuse Espee neophytes, not to mention the cars arrived years *after* the Harriman-era had ended. That said, it's possible the caption was altered, as were some sections of Solomon's book on SP Passenger Trains, where an editor changed Brian's references from "commutes" to "commuter".

  4. Photo selection is good, including both steam and diesel eras, representing photos from nearly all parts of the system. Still, it's nowhere near as awful as book on the SP Blue Streak Merchandise.

  5. MBI's current SP book is softcover. MBI is "updating" their Southern Pacific volume, which will essentially be an all new book containing new photos. Purchase the new SP book once it's been released.

  2. It includes info on more than just the Coast Line. Lots of good pictures with a lot of steam. There is a short section on the Western Division from the mole down to San Jose. There is another short section on the line to Santa Cruz but that is part of the Coast Division. If you are looking for a lot of modern diesels this is not the book for you. It covers post WWII into the mid '60s with most emphasis on the steam days.

  1. It covers Oakland to San Jose on the Western Division, the Coast Division (San Francisco - San Jose - Santa Barbara), and the Santa Barbara to Los Angeles portion of the Los Angeles Division. As always, there are great photographs and descriptions.

  3. It is an attempt to catalogue all the known steam locomotives operated by SP including subsidiaries and SP in Mexico. The book lists all road numbers for a given class, builder, year built and final disposition.

With smaller locomotives (eg: 2-6-0s and 2-8-0s) accompanied by a PE freight motor (required because the detection circuit for the wig-wag crossing signals required a trolley pole). There are several good photos, and a mention of an article on this in the May 1946 issue of Trains magazine.

  2. The History of Los Angeles would never be complete without a study of its historic buildings. This is not an attempt to make a comprehensive list of all historic buildings in Los Angeles. That goes way beyond the scope of this website (and my personal abilities!).  Despite this site being principally about restaurants and bars, for some reason this page gets the most traffic! These are my favorite places or the places I find most interesting (or to be honest, in some cases I just happened to drive by them). Obviously, any place that is not open to the public, do not trespass, disturb residents, etc. Always seek out the appropriate authorities for permission to enter.

  3. NOTE:  For a somewhat expanded version of this page (now two pages actually - A-K and L-Z) with improved pictures you can go to my new website. Ignore the rest of the pages (except Movie Palaces, Vegas Neon day and night and Dallas/Ft. Worth) as these are not finished yet. Be sure to click on the thumbnail (small pictures) to expand them or you are missing out!  Make sure to go to the bottom of the page and use the hyperlink to Historic Buildings L-Z (on the new website) when you are done with the first page.

The Official Railway Equipment Register

  1. Best bet for freight car rosters, on all of the US railroads in interchange service, is to pick up an Official Railway Equipment Register for the year you are interested. Some years are available digitally, on CD. It’s an invaluable tool in developing a representative roster.

UP in the Los Angeles Basin

  1. Jeff Asay

  2. The new book on the UP in LA is a great book, 496 pages of great maps, photos and text. The production values are terrific as would be expected from Signature Press and John and Jonathan Signor. The book provides the history of the SP,LA&SL, later UP, in Los Angeles.  It details the creation of the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach and provides information as to why SP was where it  was and why UP ended up where it did.  This book along with "The Southern Pacific in Los Angeles" by Larry Mullaly and Bruce Petty presents a great history to those of us interested in LA railroads.

Where the Light Turns Gold

  1. To understand the Surf area, you need to know the Santa Ynez Valley story. One excellent source is this book by Joanne Rife (fresno, 1977), an outstanding little book.
