Handling of Equipment


SOUTHERN PACIFIC COMPANY COAST DIVISION


CURRENT INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE HANDLING OF EQUIPMENT

SAN FRANCISCO -- April 16, 1953


TO: AGENTS, YARDMASTERS, CONDUCTORS, CLERICAL FORCES


  1. Hold for own loading. Route empties not needed to West Oakland.


  2. Load in accordance with Car Service Rules and in preference to company cars.

  3. Route all empty ATSF and WP cars to nearest connections.

  4. UP calling for prompt return of their cars. Route to Los Angeles.


AUTO & FURNITURE CARS - Company and Foreign


  1. All 40 and 50-foot company cars should be held for own loading except cars in assigned service. Until further notice, route company empties to Eugene. Handle foreigns in accordance with Car Service Rules.

  2. NYC, P&LE, DT&I and NKP asking their cars be given priority movement homeward. DO NOT LOAD.


STOCK CARS - Company and Foreign


  1. All divisions store surplus stock cars. Double deck cars to be used for double-deck loading only. All cars arriving from T&NO should be returned empty to them at El Paso, no delay. Use foreigns in preference to company cars, and send any surplus for

  2. which no immediate loading available home promptly.

  3. ATSF urging prompt return of their single-deck cars.


HOPPER CARS - Company and Foreign


  1. Surplus empty company cars should be routed to agent, Watsonville Junction, for aggregate loading. Handle foreigns in accordance with Car Service Rules, sending home empty if no immediate loading available.

  2. D&RGW asking that their hopper coal cars not be delayed.


GONDOLA CARS - Company and Foreign


  1. Handle in accordance with Car Service Rules, sending foreigns home empty if no immediate loading available. Route surplus empty company GS cars in good condition to agent, Guadalupe, for sand loading; route surplus company GS cars in rough condition to Tucson Division for scrap loading, via Los Angeles.


  2. Deliver all surplus company tanks to Los Angeles. Send foreigns home promptly, on record rights.


  3. All company 50-ft. flats should be routed to Eugene for lumber shipping. Send foreign flats home empty in accordance with Car Service Rules if no immediate loading available.


  4. Route all surplus empties to PFE Los Angeles Shop.


  5. SFRD cars should be hurried to the ATSF at Los Angeles or Richmond, whichever is shorter route.

  6. GIVE THESE CARS GOOD MOVEMENT WITHOUT FAIL.


  7. Handle promptly in accordance with Car Service Rules.


  8. Handle all packer cars on record rights unless otherwise provided.


REFRIGERATORS - WFE, BRE and FGE


  1. Route all WFE, BRE, FGE cars to GN agent, Klamath Falls.


  2. ART cars should be routed to D&RGW at Ogden, for movement eastward.


  3. Route empty MDT and BAR cars to agent, San Jose, for canned goods loading. Surplus Merchants Despatch cars should be returned east carded to NYC, provided cannot be loaded in accordance with Car Service Rules.

  4. Route BAR cars home via NYC through Chicago.


REFRIGERATORS - Private owners and leased


  1. Cars should be handled on record rights unless otherwise provided.


  2. All Agents will kindly acknowledge receipt of the above instructions and see that your equipment is handled accordingly.
