Articulated 1939 Daylight Cars Passenger Trucks

  1. They had 6 wheel pax trucks.

Modeling Articulated Pax Car Trucks

Bethlehem Car Works

  1. #1272 these trucks are the best that are currently on the market. Keeping in mind of course that these are not a match for the original trucks used by SP for these cars, given that they are metal.

  2. See www.bethlemcarworks.com under Kit Bits, Trucks

  3. Use Intermountain roller bearing wheel sets in these trucks or Bethlehem's #1263 "Challenger" trucks.

Branchline

  1. Use #2410/2411 trucks on some of their heavyweight Pullmans. Just remember to be careful if you use their wheels as they are a bit too long. Use either the .990 or .995 Reboxx wheels instead.

Central Valley

  1. There trucks are for both the Lark and Daylight diners. They are not available now and are not just right for these six-wheel trucks. However they are very close to the prototype and if you look around at the different train shows they show up from time to time. The operating quality is well worth the trade off for just the right looking trucks.

D & G

  1. They only offer the four-wheel trucks. There trucks are the only way to go both for looks and operating quality.

Model Die Casting

  1. Outdated instructions recommend the Model Die Casting #2931 for the six-wheel articulation truck, but you can't find them anywhere.

Roof Antenna posts on SP Daylight Cars corrugated sides.

  1. A good photo of the antenna posts on page 192 of Randall/Ross The Official Pullman Standard Library Volume 5 - SP Prewar Cars.

Modeling Roof Antenna

  1. The best renditions of the posts in HO were the injection molded plastic ones included in the Limited Editions kits. Coach Yard may have something better.

Observation Cars

Observation

#2954

  1. NWP observation NWP 06, named "Redwood." Car was built by Pullman in 1916. NWP 06 was a business car rebuilt from a 60' coach. This car was converted from corrugated to smooth sides in 1963 or 1964.

#109

  1. Business car SP 109, not an observation as such but a 60 foot (over end sills, 68 feet, 6 3/8 inches over pulling faces) observation-looking car. A class C60-8 coach built by Pullman in October 1916 as GH&SA 807, it and three similar cars were converted for business car use by T&NO Houston Shops in 1928. Named "Dallas" for use as a business car by that division's superintendent, it replaced a predecessor wood car of the same name. Transferred to the Pacific Lines in January 1941, it became "San Joaquin", that Pacific Lines division super's car, later (September 1941) becoming unnamed "109". Susequently as "109", it was used as the bridge inspectors car, periodically touring all of the Pacific lines. After later maintenance of way service as MW 162, it was sold to a private party.

Lettering & Numbering

  1. They would have had SP on the letterboard with Pullman at the ends.

Modeling Observation Car

Kidder 60' observation

  1. At least a couple of the bodies are imaginary (the 60-foot observation, for one). It somewhat resembled a photo from Stindt's book on the Northwestern Pacific.

Paint

  1. To repaint an ex-SP 2901 obs. use GN Empire Builder paint scheme green which is referred to in GN documents as "Pullman Green" but the paint chip is a dead on match to SP Dark Olive. It is recommended that Scalecoat GN Green (not GN Empire Builder Green, which is much lighter) as a match for SP Dark Olive. (This was the color applied to GN heavyweights.). Scalecoat EB Green only matches cars that sat out in the sun for 30 years -- it is a pale olive color, not the deep, dark color evident on new EB equipment. It is even somewhat lighter than Scalecoat Pullman Green, a pretty good color.

Solarium-Observation Cars

  1. SP never had any Plan 3975C cars.

  2. Republic, Dixie Home

  3. SP never had any Plan 3975C cars

3 Compartment, 2 Drawing Room Lounge - Observation

  1. SP had a number of heavyweight 3 compartment, 2 drawing room, lounge-observation cars. The 3-2 observations on the Overland, Sunset, and Golden State came off in January 1942 after the USA entered WWII. These cars were always lettered Pullman.

  2. SP did purchase a number of 3-2 observations specifically for conversion to business cars. HW Pullman observations were removed from SP Trains 27/28 "San Francisco Overland Limited. Withdrawn from lease, Pullman that is. SP did not operate heavyweight observations by 1950 unless it was on the Owl or one of their trains in Mexico.
