Dave Hussey Model

  1. Build using Archer Rivets. These rivets are miniature epoxy droplets applied to Microscale decal film used by Military modelers. Make the car like a Modelers Choice kit, cutting out two layers of styrene sheet for the basic sides. The outer sheet is .040 to match the thickness of the Intermountain doors, and the backing sheet was .020. Laminate a sheet of .005 that’s embossed with a ponce wheel for the row of rivets under the sill between the two sheets.

  2. Ends are from Branchline, Roof is from Moloco, underframe from a Genesis RBL, and the remainder of parts from the scrap box. Use Archer set: http://www.archertransfers.com/AR88001.html But used mostly the middle size. Order the full sheet http://www.archertransfers.com/AR88015.html . Make the door stops and add Plano roofwalk brackets.

  1. In early 1978 some of those cars were rebuilt and given the numbers shown above. In the April issue of the Equipment Register, two cars were noted in this new series, but all 50 were on hand by July. One of these cars, restenciled for 4,603 cu.ft. capacity was at Brookfield, Illinois on February 18, 1988."

Whether or not they were delivered with yellow doors you can't say, and online photos of any B-70-32s in SP or SSW reporting marks are rare as they left the roster in the 1980s.

Microscale

  1. Use the plethora of sheets available from Microscale. No single sheet really does an SP boxcar when it comes to lettering size (which was pretty much standard) and the plethora of yellow wings i.e. what might have been advertised on the car concerning load cushioning. And then to top it off is that when all else fails, you'll have to make them yourself or parts thereof...case in point is the B100-48 beer car: 'BULKHEAD LOADER' on the ball/wingportion of the herald is not done on Microscale SP boxcar sheets. Easy to print that portion to place flat on the decal...but then you're going over ribs which distorts the decal.

  1. These 40'-6" hi-cube box cars were all built to the same basic design by Pacific Car & Foundry in 1966 and featured xxxx ft 3 capacity, Hydra-Cushion underframes and 10'-6" Youngstown sliding doors. These cars came to be nicknamed the "Ugly Ducklings" due their awkward appearance.

  2. They were rebuilt as hi-cube cars for appliance service. This was probably a test program. Built new this way by PC&F in 1966 as SP 659100-659111, and even got HydraCushion installed. A car photo shows built 10-51 and apparently rebuilt Pine Bluff 12-65.

  3. The rebuilt cars get taller sides and that would be a reasonable excuse for replacing the ends.

The doors are also modified from the 6+8 RBL, I increased the height on 2 of the 8-ft doors, made a mold, and cast them in urethane resin. The roof is a Athearn overhanging X-panel from a Sieco car. I modified it to represent a non-overhanging roof. It’s not perfect, but I didn’t feel like salvaging the roof from an Intermountain 5283 or an Athearn 5347. The under frame is from Intermountain, with Details West cushion draft gear and Athearn Genesis trucks. The air hoses are from Hi-Tech Details. I made the stirrup steps from .010 x .030 brass strip.

  1. Replace the ends and ladders as a way to upgrade the cast on details. With a milling machine remove the ends. Add Cannon and Co. Plate C PC&F ends, along with some Athearn ladders and stirrup steps.  Archer rivets replaced the ones lost where the ends are attached to the sides. To "upgrade" to a B-70-61 class with a non-overhanging X-panel roof, use a roof obtained from Exactrail. It will take a bit of modifications to get it to fit. Simulate the left-over plastic tape often used to seal the doors, that was done using some white decal strips, and after they'd been softened with setting solution, just mashed them up a bit.

Modeling B-70-65

  1. If you model the Espee of the 1970s and later, you need those cars!

Athearn  Kitbash

  1. The best place to start for a model is the Athearn 6+8 door car. You'll need at least 2 cars, or at least 2 shells. The existing doors were removed. This can be a bit of a challenge because the Athearn PC&F RBLs have a "false" floor about 1/3 of the way up, and it is pretty thick. Remove the bulk of the material using a mill. Cut the doors from another 6+8 door car, and spliced the two 8-ft doors together, and make a mold to cast them in resin. Nick Molo's great vent part will definitely save some effort there.

  2. See a couple photos in the files section, in a folder labeled SP Boxcars.

Moloco

  1. The Moloco HO scale part represents vents for cars used in paper pulp service. They were also used on Evergreen box cars, most of which later went into Espee service and received SP colors. See photos of such a box car on Lee Gautreaux's website, B-70-65 class car, and Clyde King has photos of one in Evergreen Freight Car colors. Moloco is a small detail parts company that's been around for several years -- see their listings in the Walthers HO scale 2009 Reference Book.

  1. The last 70 ton class of box cars that featured the Hydra-Cushion over the “For Fragile Freight” is the B-70-66 class of 1972-73. After that the FFF seems to have been dropped. This seems to have continued until the B-70-79 class (ironically enough built in 1979) on which a reduced-size CUSHION CAR replaced it on the left side of the car.

Rumor is that Athearn received complaints from modelers about derailments and/or operating problems which these "modelers" attributed to the wheelsets. Use Northwest Shortline 88-tread wheels on virtually all your equipment for trouble free.

  1. Best bet is to scratchbuild the sides and use a 40ft overhanging diagonal panel roof (shortened from a 50ft part) and Cannon's new Plate C box car end. You'd need to find 10' Youngstown doors probably from a donor model.

Athearn Genesis

  1. SP B-100-38 class PC&F 10'6" box car

  2. Nicely done model with evidence of fairly decent and crisp mold work, the car features separately applied ladders, stirrup steps, and underbody details, and also has an etched walkover above the coupler draft area. Paint and lettering are pretty good. The roof is well done and does not have the customary Athearn "mold bugger" in the center which is a relief. As to overall accuracy, it appears to match photos pretty closely. Photos found in:       http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Espee/files/

  3. The model comes with Athearn's 100-ton trucks featuring rolling bearing caps, however, Athearn has reverted to using fat wheels with 110-profile tread instead of the semi-finescale 88-profile tread they used on earlier Genesis cars. Consider using semi-finescale 88-tread wheels (from NorthWest Short Line) on *all* of equipment.

  1. Graffiti partially obscures the lower half of the car as posted on Lee Gautreaux's website. One cannot confirm as to what type of roof this car has. From the side it sort of appears to be a Stanray X panel roof.

Modeling B-100-40

Athearn Genesis

  1. An Athearn Genesis SIECO 50' box car was studied for the Stanray X-Panel roof -- Athearn part number G42001. You might want to pass along to Clyde that both the Genesis roof and the Branchline X-panel (essentially identical, since Chris Clune cut both) are Overhanging type and the B-100-40 has a Non Overhanging roof. No one makes one.

Kitbash

  1. Clyde will probably use Branchline 4/4 ends (modified) and scratchbuild the car's sides. He'd like to source a 12-foot door, but if he can't easily locate one from an Eel River Models beer car (now available from Railshops, though spending $13 bucks just to get the doors...),

  2. He (and us too) needs a plate C end too, more like the Genesis RBLs than the Plate B Branchline end.

Scratchbuilt Elizabeth Allen

  1. I scratch built the sides, including the doors; the rib spacing is different from anything I could find in an already made model. It’s difficult, and oh-so-tedious to get all of the waffles looking the same. On this car I salvaged the door rollers from the Athearn RBL. Turned out to be almost as much work as making them, which is why I just went ahead and made them for the B-70-58. The roof is Branchline, which is actually the same as the Athearn. I ultimately modified the Intermountain under frame by rearranging the brake rigging and replacing the Hydra-cushion with a scratch built Keystone. Now I’d use the excellent Moloco part(s). I made the stirrup steps from .010 x .030 brass strip.

Lettering & Numbering

  1. You won’t find any decals with the word "crossbar," so you will have to piece it together letter-by-letter.

  2. The loader type logo proved to be a PIA.
